Romeo and Juliet – decisions and consequences

Decision: Romeo going to the Capulets party

Point:

Romeo and Benvolio are informed of a party at the Capulets. With this information, they make the decision to go so that Romeo will have the chance to find himself a lover.

Example:

Mercutio encourages Romeo to enjoy himself but he is acting depressed and unwillingly enters the Capulets. “Romeo, we must have you dance” – Mercutio “Not I, believe me. You have dancing shoes. With nimble souls; I have a soul of lead.” – Romeo.

Explanation:

If Romeo had continued to ignore Mercutio in his attempt to convince him to enter the party, then Romeo may have never met Juliet and fallen for her as deeply as he did that night. This makes this decision one of the most important parts of the story. Mercutio plays a very important part in this, because without him Romeo likely would have never gone as there would be no one there to persuade him.
